All you need to know about Rheumatoid arthritis and its Ayurvedic treatment

Have you ever woken up and felt a stiffness in your legs and body? Do you experience a pain in your joints that subsides through the day? If this is the case then there is a huge chance you are suffering from Arthritis. Let us understand the main causes of this disease and how Ayurveda can help treat arthritis through lifestyle, Ayurvedic treatment for arthritis and arthritis pain relief medicines.

Rheumatoid arthritis

What is Rheumatoid arthritis?

Being an auto-immune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues. Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

Causes of Rheumatoid arthritis

The cause of arthritis cannot be attributed to one particular cause – the main reason the disease arises is due malfunctioning of the immune system – which is responsible for the creation of antibodies against foreign bodies. In case of rheumatoid arthritis, the body starts creating antibodies in the absence of foreign bodies which in turn attach the healthy cells in the body. Few other causes include lack of exercise, air pollution, insecticides, exposure to second-hand smoke and genetics.

Causes According to Ayurveda for Rheumatoid arthritis

According to Ayurveda, arthritis is caused by the formation of endotoxins called “Aam”, which is due to the malfunctioning of the digestive system and inability to digest food correctly. Aam is a dense fluid that looks like mucus in one’s stool. In addition to being caused by consuming incompatible foods, stale food, even an unhealthy lifestyle can cause aam and constipation. The fluid gets deposited in our body’s joints and causes rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis

Unbearable pain and stiffness in the joints is the primary symptom. It typically begins with the swelling of the middle finger and spreading to the other fingers. The pain and stiffness is most severe in the mornings and continues to subside with daily movement. Other symptoms include feeling drowsy and sleepy in the day, lethargy, fatigue, fever, insomnia and constipation.

Diet & Lifestyle changes as per Ayurveda for Rheumatoid arthritis

The treatment of arthritis through Ayurveda discourages any form of massage for the patients. Panchakarma massage therapies are quite useful in temporarily subsiding pain in Arthritic patients. It is recommended that seventy percent of one’s diet should be raw foods, fruits, and vegetables, nuts and seeds. Instead of drinking tea or coffee one should switch to green tea. Foods such as cold drinks, processed meat, white flour, refined sugar should all be eliminated from the diet.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Rheumatoid arthritis

7 Ayurvedic Home Remedies to Treat Acidity and Heartburn

Acidity is probably as old as our love for spices. Long before modern medicine developed, people turned to Ayurveda for answers. This ancient science has understood the human body in great detail that continues to baffle people till date. At Dr Vaidya’s, we’ve practiced the science for generations and came up with a unique ayurvedic medicine for acidity.

For most of us, acidity is quite infrequent. However, if you feel the burn more than a couple of times during a week, you’re suffering from Hyperacidity (Amlapitta in Ayurveda). This happens when the acid in your stomach, that is supposed to digest food, finds its way into the food pipe.

Ayurvedic treatments for acidity recommend multiple items that have healing property. These help restore the acidic balance in our body so that it doesn’t end up in the food pipe. But before going for an Ayurvedic treatment for acidity and heartburn, you should try some effective home remedies. Here we present some of the most effective Ayurvedic home treatments for common gastric problems.

7 natural Ayurvedic home remedies for Acidity & Heartburn

Coconut Water

Tender coconut water is nature’s ENO – an Ayurvedic medicine that brings instant relief from acidity. It has a natural alkalizing effect, which cools the acidic stomach juices. It even adds a protective layer over the stomach to prevent irritation from excess acid.

How to use: Rich in fiber, a glass of coconut water taken after every meal helps in easy digestion.

Amla is one of the best natural remedies to cure indigestion and heartburn. It is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, which reduces swelling, tenderness, and pain in stomach. Amla is known to reduce Pitta (Heat) in our body, providing relief from the burning sensation.

How to use: You can either boil and sun-dry the amla or purchase a pack of dried Amla to chew on.

Ginger is another excellent Ayurvedic home remedy for acidity. Because it reduces swelling, ginger brings down the chances of stomach pushing into the chest cavity. Consequently, acidic juices don’t flow into the food pipe.

How to use: Make a habit to chew on a couple of leaves during the day. Or if you like it better, boil a few leaves in water and bid goodbye to acidity with a Holy Basil Tea.

A few people doubt cinnamon but it is an absolutely safe Ayurvedic treatment for acidity. It helps to break down the food faster by stimulating the digestive enzymes. Additionally, it reduces the risk of developing ulcers when the acid flows into the food pipe.

The enzymes in papaya are very effective in breaking down complex proteins. This means our bodies need to produce less acid to break down food that relieves the painful heartburn.

How to use: Add ripe papaya to your breakfast, or as a post-dinner savory in your meal today.

Garlic has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. Unlike other natural remedies for acidity, it helps in maintaining a crucial balance of digestive bacteria in our stomach. Taken in moderation, it can provide almost immediate relief from acidity.

LIVitup! And Jaundice

We all know the term “jaundice” as a disease. But actually jaundice is not a disease but a symptom of various diseases. Jaundice can be caused by inflammation of the liver, damage to the bile duct, Gilbert’s syndrome or hemolytic anemia. These disorders can be caused because various reasons, both external and internal.

The Pitta dosha (Ayurvedic element representing fire) in the body gets aggravated because of consumption of alcohol or faulty eating habits. Other factors that can cause jaundice are anger, stress, anxiety and too much physical exertion. This impairs the blood and muscle tissues of the liver, causing blockages in the channels of the liver. As a result, the accumulated pitta (in the form of bile) gets thrown back into the blood leading to what we know as jaundice which discolours the sclera of the eyes and skin.

Individuals suffering from jaundice can experience digestion problems such as stomachaches and vomiting, urine infection and abdominal pain, weakness and itchiness. Jaundice can be of 2 types: Obstructive and Non- Obstructive jaundice. Obstructive jaundice is when the liver is functioning well but the bile duct has some form of obstruction. Non- obstructive jaundice is because of the breakdown of the red blood cells. In this case, the liver is damaged and hence it cannot process the bilirubin efficiently.

Even though jaundice is curable, prevention is always better than cure. Since this disease arises from the liver, the best way to prevent it is by keeping the liver healthy by avoiding alcohol as well as hot, spicy and oily food as it slows down the functioning of the liver. Exercising on a regular basis also improves the liver function and can be a good prevention to keep the body’s systems in good condition. Consuming a lot of fluids like chamomile tea, buttermilk, coconut water, carrot juice accelerates the flow of bilirubin through urine and thus can be a natural way to prevent jaundice. Consuming vegetables such as radish, spinach and garlic and fruits such as banana and papaya are also very effective means of prevention. The time taken to cure jaundice varies from a week to a month, based on the severity of the case thus, it is better to be safe than sorry.

At Dr. Vaidya’s we have a product called LIVitup! which contains herbs such as Arogyavardhini Ras and Kalmegh Ghan that protects the liver by pacifying the energies aggravated in the body. These herbs regulate the functioning of the liver and increase the flow of bile. Along with this one must follow a systematic diet plan to restore proper digestion and efficient metabolism.

The herbs in LIVitup! help to reduce bilirubin which will normalize the colour of the sclera and skin. They also help to normalize urine colour. Digestion improves and the feeling of weakness gradually rescinds. Treatment with LIVitup! can continue for a while even after the patient returns to a normal state in order to rejuvenate the body and bring back the lost immunity.

Taking Ayurveda Medicines Along With Allopathy

The effect of Ayurveda and Allopathy depends and differs from person to person. Also,it depends on the mindset of a person and their willingness to try an alternate medication. But there have been many instances where people are open to change and would want to try an alternate form of medication for relief from whatever illness they are dealing with. Now the question arises and has been a matter of debate since a long time as to whether Ayurvedic medicines can be taken along with Allopathy medicines or not?

What makes up the health of a person?

There are different factors that make up for the good health of a person. These include the person’s biological health, their mental stability and a combination of social and environmental factors. A healthy person can be defined as the state of health of the person which does not only have abstinence from diseases but is also its social and mental well-being.

It is understandable that that no medical system, whether Allopathic or Ayurvedic, is complete in itself. Hence it becomes necessary to amalgamate the two forms of medicine keeping in mind the positive aspects of the both as well as shortcomings and disadvantages of both. Understanding the difference between both the forms of medication can help people decide whether they want to take Ayurveda along with allopathic and also which approach would be better to treat the illness a person is suffering from.

What is the difference between the working of Ayurveda and Allopathy?

Determining the difference between the two forms of medicine, i.e. Ayurveda and allopathy is not rocket science.
